Wallace’s market, Friendship, ME

Wallace’s “Groceries and Provisions” is an institution in Friendship and a must visit for anyone. Located in the middle of the Town of Friendship, it has a little bit of everything including quality (many times local) meats and cheeses, real Italian sandwiches and pizza, fresh locally-grown produce, and a wide variety of groceries, as well as a nice assortment of beer and wine. Owned and operated by Ernie Coletti and his wife Joanie, Wallace’s has been featured in the Portland Press Herald, Downeast Magazine, EatRockland.com and even on “Super Chef” with Bobby Flay. Although we will let it slide that Ernie is a Bruins fan, like a magician who correctly tells you what card you picked out of the deck, he and Joanie have done a fantastic job stocking just the right “this or that” you are looking for. PS: their pizza is excellent!

Jameson Point Lobster Company, Friendship, ME

Jameson’s offers a pleasingly casual and relaxing atmosphere in which to dine and has a 1950’s throwback theme with picnic tables both inside or out. If you are looking for the best seafood in town, Jameson Point Lobster Company is the place to be. From fresh lobster, crab, and clam rolls to fish tacos that are scrumptious, to haddock sandwiches and freshly steamed lobsters and clams. Jameson’s also offers scallops, shrimp, and absolutely the best french fries (anywhere!) and onion rings. Their menu includes more traditional fare as well with hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and chicken strips and wings. Last, but not least, Jameson’s has a great selection of ice cream and milk shakes for dessert! Dine in or carry out, Jameson’s offers both lunch and dinner in season.

Narrows Tavern, Waldoboro, ME

OK, so downtown Waldoboro might not be the thriving hot spot like Boston is, but then again most don’t come here for a thriving downtown scene. This, however, is my go-to place when most other nearby places are already closed. Only about a 10 mile drive from Flood’s Cove, the atmosphere is casual and chill. There is a quiet bar area (before 10:00pm) with darts on the side, but also a comfortable dining area in the front with nice big picnic-style tables that allows all the personal space to stretch out as much as you want. The food is excellent with plenty of fresh seafood dishes but also lot’s of other options like steak, salads, chicken fingers, pasta, etc. for landlubba's and a good kids menu to boot! Super friendly staff will make you and your family feel at home in no time.

Shaw’s Fish and Lobster Wharf, New Harbor, ME

This is my favorite place to go, period! Shaw’s has an outdoor deck and inside dining options as well as a local bar down below and is located on a wharf in New Harbor with an amazing view of the open ocean. In addition, there is an ample outside dining area on the dock.

Shaw’s is usually busy during normal lunch and dinner hours, but the line moves quickly. With a plethora of fresh seafood dishes like haddock sandwiches, steamed clams, cooked lobster diners, to a fried seafood platter, or scollops, I would be remiss if I didn’t make a plug for their chicken tenders, too; not sure what they do, but simply the best! There is also a beer and wine bar upstairs and the outdoor deck dining area also provides up close and intimate views of all the lobster boats at their moorings in the harbor.

Hardy Boat Cruises

Shaw’s Wharf is also home to the Hardy Boat cruises providing daily passage to and from Monhegan Island as well as cruises to see the Puffins. The ticket booth is located on the wharf next to a T-shirt shop, indoor mini lobster pound, and kids fun area on the dock while you wait to board.

simmons lobster wharf, Friendship Harbor

If you have a lobster monster in your family who loves “lobstas” right off the lobster boat and in BULK, add Simmons Lobster Wharf to your contacts. Located on the water in Friendship Harbor, Simmons Lobster Wharf is where many local lobster boats dock to unload their lobsters after a long day of hauling. You can call Simmons Lobster Wharf ahead of time, or better yet, just make the short drive to Friendship Harbor and walk down onto the wharf to buy the freshest hard shell or “sheadas” at a great price (market price, so price per pound will vary).

Monhegan Boat Line, Port Clyde, ME

Every morning, the Laura B leaves the docks at Port Clyde at about the same time as the Elizabeth Ann readies herself to leave Monhegan. Each ferry is headed in the opposite direction but both are carrying mail, supplies, and people to and from the Island of Monhegan. Reservations are recommended to secure your passage for a 1/2-day, full day or overnight adventure on Monhegan. The island is home to about 55 year round residence that swells to over 300 during the summer. This quaint and quintessential Maine island is home to a thriving artist community with galleries around town, a nice coffee and souvenir shop, the Outsiders Inn (the only hotel on the island overlooking Monhegan Bay), a general store, a light house, and walking trails through the forrest that lead to towering open ocean cliffs with vistas looking out over the expansive ocean. You are free to roam around the cliffs, find you own special look out, have a picnic, or simply walk around the small town browsing the small shops and galleries. This is one of the best 1/2-day, full day or overnight trips that Floods Cove can recommend for the whole family or just the most adventurous members. There is parking available in Port Clyde, a general store, ice cream shop, kayaking outfitters and Linda Bean’s (Heiress to the L.L. Bean fortune) harbor side restaurant called The Dip Net. For those “flat landers” among us, don’t forget to take dramamine prior to boarding the ferry. Note: Monhegan Boat Line also offers sunset, puffin watching and lighthouse cruises.

Moody’s Diner, Motel and Gift Shop

Moody’s Diner is a Maine coast institution and authentic classic. Those who have been to Moody's Diner know that Moody's is not a "quaint-on-purpose" tourist attraction. It is a diner on US Route 1 in Waldoboro, Maine, plain and simple.

It has survived, prospered, and grown these 80-plus years because of good food, reasonable prices, and quick, pleasant service. There are people who eat at Moody's every day, and those who come in every time they travel to Maine.

All are made welcome. Locals aren't expected to go elsewhere during tourist season and tourists aren't gouged for their vacation cash - it's never going to be that kind of place.

Easy and casual, Moody’s has counter front seating up front and private booth seating throughout the rest of the restaurant. Nothing fancy, real atmosphere, good diner food.
