Iconic Defiance gets a lift…ready to welcome guests for the next 50 years!

Defiance Renovation update

During the winter of 2019 and spring of 2020, the Defiance underwent a significant renovation including a new, higher concrete foundation, new custom-made stone fireplace, mantel, and red brick chimney, new concrete dock platform, new pilings and railings, as well as new shingles and windows on the island side of the cottage.

With the the Defiance interior flooding with increasing frequency over the last 30 years or so and the prospects of incremental sea level rise due primarily to man-made global warming, the decision was made to lift the Defiance up off it’s old field stone foundation and to pour a new, taller concrete foundation to keep the Defiance high and dry even with full moon high tides and angry winter weather yet to come.

With grey, overcast skies and cold winter temperatures in the foreseeable forecast, the scene seemed rather bleak to start. Once the Defiance was set on blocking, a new foundation was quickly poured into their forms and the Defiance was lowered back onto its new base.

fireplace, mantel and chimney

Although we attempted to preserve the historic fireplace that many know all too well, we were forced to settle for a new, custom-made stone fireplace, mantel and red brick chimney that is impressively situated in the living room and commands attention as the most prominent architectural feature of the Defiance.

To finish up the project, the Defiance dock was outfitted with all new pilings of the new right height in relation to the new, higher concrete slab that now forms the new dock. New steps were installed and new windows, sheathing and shingles were completed on the Island side.

Captain Ambrose Simmons would be proud of all the upgrades and improvements that will keep the Defiance rock solid, dry and in its current location for decades to come. And, of course, we hope each of you enjoy the attention to a cottage that has been a silent witnessed to so many great moments and has been the back drop for countless great memories.

Barnstable Project update

In the spring of 2020, the old, sloping covered porch at the Barnstable and concrete staircase with metal hand rail were removed in favor of a new, stable front porch, center steps and landscaping with hydrangeas and rose bushes.
